Rex Energy says 1Q drilling better than expected

Rex Energy Corp. said Monday that its first-quarter production more than doubled and exceeded the high-end of its previous guidance.

The State College, Pa.-based oil and gas company's production totaled 60.7 million cubic feet of gas equivalent per day. That beat its earlier estimate of up to 60 million cubic feet of gas equivalent per day.

The results represent a 120 percent increase in Rex's average daily production rate from the same quarter last year. Oil and natural gas liquids accounted for 26 percent of total net production, the company said.

Rex said its realized natural gas prices were $3.72 per thousand cubic feet, oil prices were $98.08 per barrel and natural gas liquids prices were $48.98 per barrel.

Rex also said that on Friday it began drilling its first horizontal well in Ohio's Warrior Prospect, which will attempt to access the oil and gas-rich Utica Shale.

The company expects completion results to be available in August. Rex said it plans to drill two more horizontal Utica Shale wells in the Warrior Prospect this year.
